2018: Cultural Tourism Year

The General Secretary of Empresa i Coneixement (Company and Knowledge), Pau Villòria, and the Direector General of Turisme (Tourism), Octavi Bono, presented Cultural Tourism Year on the 20th of March before over 650 professionals from the world of tourism and culture. The act took place in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia -MNAC, and was also attended by the General Secretary of Culture, Maria Dolors Portús, and the Director of the Catalan Tourist Agency, Xavier Espasa.

2018 was declared European Year of Cultural Heritage by the European Union. This March, the Catalan Tourism Agency (ACT) decided to proclaim 2018 as Cultural Tourism Year in order to claim the role of culture as a key differentiating and singularising factor in Catalan tourist destinations.

It is, therefore, a bidirectional challenge in which culture boosts the singularity of cultural tourist attractions, and tourism takes on the challenge of appreciating culture and contributing to its social and economic sustainability. In this way, the aim is to claim all cultural heritage, which includes that which is internationally known and the more local and unknown aspects.

Throughout 2018 more than 150 action will be carried out, aimed at both the public and professionals, organised by different companies and entities from the world of tourism and culture.

The Catalan Tourism Agency provides a budget of 2,800,000 euros to promote this theme year in different markets. So, apart from the Catalan market itself, the Catalan Tourism Agency has selected a series of markets to focus its activities on, either because in these markets tourists have a big interest in cultural tourism, or because even though they are important issuing markets, culture is not among the main reasons for the trip and the aim is for it to become so. So the closer markets where the Cultural Tourism Year promotion will be undertaken are France, Germany, Russia, Italy, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Spain, Belgium and the Nordic countries, while the remote markets selected are the United States and Canada, Australia, China, Japan and Chile.

OLOT – GIRONA – LLORET MEETINGS. A pioneering initiative of meetings tourism in Catalonia

Olot-Girona-Lloret Meetings (OGL Meetings), established in 2015 and now consolidated, is a project that offers the possibility of organising your congresses and meetings in the three regions that come under the umbrella of already existing local initiatives in the province of Girona: Reunions entre Volcans (Meetings among Volcanoes), Girona City Convention Bureau and Lloret Convention Bureau. Its aim is to fuse the efforts, values and resources of the three cities with the aim of organising the events jointly.

The added value for the client are the three very different landscapes – mountain, city and sea – but which are just 35 minutes journey between each one, and 60 minutes from Barcelona. They are regions that are unique for their characteristics and this makes them very attractive for organising any type of event.

Olot, capital of La Garrotxa, is an area rich in landscapes, as is the case of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa, and in gastronomy with its local products and volcanic cuisine. La Garrotxa has more than 40 meeting rooms and singular spaces, and more than 9,605 hotel places. Can you imagine a conference with the total silence of the mountains and amid the sleeping volcanoes?

Girona, a city full of culture and with more than two-thousand years of history. It has a congress hall and more than 2,500 hotel places. Moreover, its gastronomy is unique, since it is one of the most important gastronomic zones in the world, something endorsed by its 20-plus Michelin stars. Have you ever thought about the possibility of enjoying one of the dishes of the Celler de Can Roca during your congress?

And, Lloret de Mar, which is a city located beside the sea with singular spaces such as the Gardens of Santa Clotilde, and the unspoilt coves in the area. It has 3 congress halls, more than 80 meeting rooms and more than 30,000 hotel places. So why not organise a congress in a such a well-equipped city and 5 minutes’ walk from the beach?

According to the Diari de Girona, in 2015, between the three cities more than 200 corporate and congress events were held, in which more than 60,000 people attended. For this reason it was thought important to present it as a unique product, together, differentiated and transversal, which has today become a pioneering initiative in Catalonia and Spain in this type of alliance.

The Tax Office has clarified that the training courses for healthcare staff financed by pharmaceutical companies will not be subject to income tax deductions (IRPF). Specifically, Cristóbal Montoro has promised Serafín Montero, President of the Professional Medical Organisation (OMC), to modify article 44 of the IRPF Regulation to include medical training among tax exemptions. This then, clears up the uncertainty generated within the medical sector in May 2017 when the Tax Office had considered that healthcare staff had to “pay in kind” the expenses deriving from invitations to congresses by pharmaceutical companies
