Family Holidays

What are the Family Holiday labels of approval?

The Catalan Tourist Board (ACT) awards the Family Holiday labels of approval to distinguish towns that are particularly sensitive to this market segment, providing facilities and services adapted to the needs of families with children.

These towns are certified as providing accommodation, catering, leisure and free time facilities for younger visitors. Once verified by ACT inspectors, resorts are awarded the Family Beach or Nature and Mountain Holiday labels of approval to certify that they provide such services and amenities.

There are currently 25 certified destinations in Catalonia that have been awarded these specialised labels:

Family Beach label

  • Blanes
  • Calafell
  • Calella
  • Calonge – Sant Antoni
  • Cambrils
  • Castelldefels
  • Castell Platja-d’Aro
  • El Vendrell
  • Lloret de Mar
  • Malgrat de Mar
  • Pineda de Mar
  • Roses
  • Salou
  • Sant Feliu de Guíxols
  • Sant Pere Pescador
  • Santa Susanna
  • Torroella de Montgrí – L’Estartit

Family Nature and Mountain label

  • Berga
  • La Vall d’en Bas-Les Preses
  • La Vall de Boí
  • Les Valls d’Àneu
  • Muntanyes de Prades

Some additional destinations are also currently going through the certification approval process: Vall de Camprodon, Alp-La Molina-Masella, Sort-Rialp-Port Ainé, Vall de Núria-Vall de Ribes, and Els Ports.

The Family Holiday labels of approval lend greater visibility to the towns that wish to attract that kind of visitors. Some 60% of holidaymakers who arrive in Catalonia form part of the family tourism segment, in other words, are adults who come to enjoy their stay along with their children. Destinations certified with the label of approval can guarantee them:

  • Specialised services for families.
  • Special attention to safety regulations, both in public spaces as well as in the rest of the establishments certified with the brand or which have been awarded the label.
  • A wide and varied programme of animation, services and activities for children.
  • Facilities adapted to the very young in public zones, accommodation and other amenities.
  • Easy access to information about the programmes of daily activities, to help visitors better plan their stay.

Certification guarantees visitors that their families will enjoy a range of advantages provided by services adapted to their specific needs: identification bracelets, family suites or communicating rooms, children’s swimming pools with monitors, availability of cots, children’s beach clubs, supervision, adapted restaurant services, animation and street entertainment for children, public leisure areas and games for the very young, theme and water parks, possibility of bicycle excursions, and so on.

A town that wishes to be awarded a Family Holiday label of approval must ensure that part of its offering is adapted to family tourism. The main adapted resources in this respect are as follows:

  • Main attractions the town has to offer (beach, cultural and natural areas)
  • Accommodation (hotels, campsites, rural houses, hostels, apartments)
  • Selection of restaurants
  • Complementary features
    • Tourist Information Offices
    • Enterprises offering products of tourism-cultural interest
    • Others (animation, children’s street entertainment, leisure areas, games, theme and water parks, bicycle excursions and so on)
