Regenera4MED
Towards a Mediterranean model of regenerative tourism
Led by the Catalan Tourist Board (ACT), Regenera4MED is a 33-month Interreg Euro-MED project co-funded under the programme’s mission of enhancing sustainable tourism and with a budget of over 2 million euros.
Led by a coalition of Mediterranean partners, including Catalonia, Liguria, Abruzzo, Crete, Corsica and Split-Dalmatia County, this project will pioneer a new regenerative tourism model that aims to go beyond sustainability, actively restoring and enhancing environmental, cultural and community values.
As the Mediterranean is a major global tourism hub, the project will involve multiple stakeholders, including local communities, public authorities, SMEs, academia and environmental organisations, working together through a quintuple helix governance model.
The project will focus on three main elements:
Regenerative tourism model
Create a new regenerative tourism model, developed in six pilot regions, that helps promote climate change adaptation, resilience, and a positive environmental impact.
Regenerative experiences
Develop and test regenerative tourism experiences to create sustainable travel options that strengthen local economies and preserve local heritage and culture.
Knowledge and tools
Create a self-assessment tool called RISET, and produce a toolkit such as the Regenera4MED Blueprint to ensure the scalability of the project’s results.
As the project’s lead partner, the ACT is responsible for its coordination and management as well as implementation of the tools developed in the pilot destinations. It is also leading the Regenerative Tourism Support Programme, which includes training, ideation, co-creation and promotional activities. Furthermore, it will establish synergies and collaboration opportunities between the project and other European stakeholders.
In Catalonia, the developed tools will be implemented in the Seafaring Towns and Districts pilot areas, with the support of Barcelona Provincial Council and the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board.
